Dalalæða’s Dysjar is an artwork that intertwines music, poetry and social history. Musically speaking, this is a gloomy approach to the form of jazz -some sort of “doom jazz”- characterized by slow progression, mysterious atmosphere and impressionism. The sound of the traditional jazz piano trio is merged with a neoclassical texture from bass and contrabass clarinet as well as electric sounds and recordings taken from the Icelandic environment in the city and nature.
The Monades album is the result of a research work on rhythm in traditional music, especially Middle Eastern, African and Eastern European. All these musics employ rhythmic figures that may appear elaborate or even complex when compared to those used in today's commercially oriented Western music.

J. Peter Schwalm: piano, drums, electronics and programming
Arve Henriksen: trumpets, percussion and voices
How we define the age we live in depends entirely on the frame we choose to view it through. On one timescale we’re just getting settled into the 21st century; zoom out and we’re deeply entrenched in the Anthropocene. We might be waking to the dawn of an enlightened, interconnected new era or teetering on the brink of a sixth mass extinction.
Neuzeit, which German electro-acoustic composer J. Peter Schwalm views through his new duo outing with the Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen, is generally taken to refer to the modern era that began in the 16th century and witnessed the rise of Western Civilization.
“Neuzeit reflects the time of change after a crash,” says Schwalm. “The cards are remixed again; changes in any direction are possible. There are opportunities to get things right again – e.g. to rearrange them. Of course, there is always a dark side in everything.”

The record has been in the works for some time, with the Icelandic composer completing much of the project before lockdown.
Once quarantine had been enforced, Ólafur Arnalds retreated to his Reykjavik studio, where he finished the material.

Keith Jarrett Piano
The second complete show to be issued from Keith Jarrett’s 2016 European tour – following on from the widely-acclaimed concert released as Munich 2016 - this double album documents the pianist’s solo performance at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest. Jarrett, whose family roots reach back to Hungary, viewed the Budapest concert as akin to a homecoming, and the context inspired much creative improvisation.
Erik K Skodvin and electronic composer Jasmine Guffond
Finnish musician Merja Kokkonen (Islaja), who improvised wordless vocals.
"...[T]he most beautiful thing about my burrow is the stillness. Of course, that is deceptive. At any moment it may be shattered and then all will be over. For the time being, however, the silence is with me." - Franz Kafka.
"The Burrow" takes its name from Franz Kafka's unfinished short story that was written only six months before his death. The tale, published posthumously in 1931, centres around a small creature who builds a burrow that's anxiously fortified in an attempt to protect against perceived attacks. This sense of fear of the outside world feels even more focused in 2020. Each track is named after animals that are either extinct or almost extinct, adding a sense of loss that hangs in the air, punctuated by screams and deep reverberating piano hits. As the world we thought we knew quickly retreats from view and the idea of safety shifts rapidly, Skodvin and Guffond explore the impulse to protect what we know with an emotionally charged sound that provides a foil with cautious, haunting spaces in between.

The Saffronkeira project was established in early 2008 by Eugenio Caria in Sardinia.
Paolo Fresu Italian jazz trumpeter.
"It is time for man to set a goal for himself. It is time for man to plant the seed of his highest hope. His soil is still rich enough for it. But that soil will one day be poor and exhausted, and no lofty tree will any longer be able to grow on it. Alas. There will come a time when man will no longer launch the arrow of his longing beyond man - and the string of his bow will have unlearned to whir! I say to you: one must still have chaos in oneself to give birth to a dancing star. I say to you: you still have chaos in yourself. Alas. There will come a time when man can no longer give birth to any star. Alas. There will come the time of the most despicable man, who can no longer despise himself." - excerpt of Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra".
Eugenio Caria. "In Origine: The Field of Repentance" - концептуальный альбом, посвященный происхождению человека и его влиянию на цикл творения и разрушения, который движет эволюцией Вселенной.

Yann Tiersen :: Tribulations (E.C. Ball)
Yann Tiersen :: If You Listen (Françoise Hardy)
Yann Tiersen :: Piano Phase (Steve Reich)
There’s a lot happening in the collective works of Yann Tiersen. Initially inspired by Einstürzend Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle and other post-punk/industrial groups, Tiersen’s music would soon grow further nuanced, moving in more subtle directions. It’s this which makes the approach to his Lagniappe Session all the more interesting, in how he turns that very direction on its head.

Himmelsrandt is a project by Koblenz-based pianist and violinist Peter Honsalek. We last heard from this musician back in 2017, when he released 4 Moments & Rain on Unperceived Records. Prior to that, in 2016, his debut Schneeland was selected by our Reader’s Poll as one of the best of the year records, so it’s no surprise that I have my keen eye on him... Meerland is at once more personal and neo-classical than Honsalek’s past releases.

Omar Rodriguez Calvo - Bass
Jürgen Spiegel - Drums, Percussion
“Dance” is the title of this new album and the trio takes listeners along on a journey around the world, letting the widest variety of dance styles flash and flare as a vivid form of emotional expression.Martin Tingvall describes how it came about: “The idea for ‘Dance’ emerged while we were rehearsing ‘Cuban SMS’, one of the first new songs. All jokes aside: It was really hard for us to stay in one place as we worked. There was so much rhythm and energy in the music. As for me, I can’t dance to save my life, but it just grabbed us and carried us away. The idea for an album full of dances was born.”
Espen Eriksen Trio return with End of Summer, their fifth album. This time the Norwegian jazz trio are back by themselves, following a critically acclaimed album, Perfectly Unhappy, with Andy Sheppard. "You know, hyenas aren't the bad ones... These days it's humans you should fear."

In a contemplative exploration on solitude, Sergio Díaz De Rojas has delved into a nostalgic state of mind after moving from Peru to Spain, leaving friends and family behind for a new chapter of his life. Jazzland is proud to present the brand new opus from two of the brightest luminaries on the Norwegian scene. "Snow Catches on her Eyelashes" emanates musical authority, a hyperconscious layering of textures and musicality, at once evocative of some otherworldly space, yet familiar at a deep human level that resonates with each sonic flourish.
Bang's manipulation of field recordings, samples, found sounds, and of Aarset's playing provides a musical and textural continuity and coherence to the album. His skilful interweaving of a huge array of disparate sonic material into new soundscapes and auditory artefacts, densely layered without obfuscation, whether like nebulous visions or vivid hallucinations, gives clarity to the overarching spirit of the album.
Featuring contributions from Nils Petter Molvær (trumpet), Hilde Norbakken (piano), Anders Engen (drums/percussion), Audun Erlien (bass), and a vocal sample from Sidsel Endresen, there is an endless diversity to the tonal characteristics of each piece while maintaining the consistency of the musical language the duo have created and evolved during their many years of collaboration.
