Lubomyr Melnyk - Fallen Trees
Released: December 7, 2018
Label: Erased Tapes, ERATP116
The story of Continuous Piano pioneer Lubomyr Melnyk is "one of the best in music," says A Closer Listen, "A sonic parallel to that of J.K. Rowling with more than a touch of magic." The Ukrainian composer, whose 70th birthday coincides with this new release, developed his spontaneous style of cascading, arpeggiated piano playing while homeless in Paris. His work has reached a broader audience in recent years thanks to releases on Unseen Worlds and Erased Tapes. The latter label brings forth Fallen Trees, an ambitious and collaborative album featuring contributions from Japanese vocal artist Hatis Noit, Berlin-based cellist Anne Müller, and American singer David Allred, produced by Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths.

Violaine Cochard & Edouard Ferlet - PLUCKED'N DANCE
Violaine Cochard & Edouard Ferlet - PLUCKED'N DANCE
Released: October 12, 2018
Label: Alpha Classics

Tord Gustavsen Trio – The Other Side
Released: August 31, 2018
Label: ECM Records, ECM 2608
Tord Gustavsen: piano, Sigurd Hole: double bass, Jarle Vespestad: drums
“This is the chill-out as a state of grace, and it can go as deep as you like. Sublime,” wrote the Inde-pendent on Sunday of the Gustavsen’s trio’s Being There, released in 2007. Over the last decade Tord has experimented with other ensemble forms and formats, but on The Other Side - recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in January 2018 – he returns decisively to the piano trio, with faithful drummer Jarle Vespestad, and excellent new bassist Sigurd Hole. Hole’s approach to his instru-ment, drawing on folk influences as well as modern jazz, is ideally suited to Gustavsen’s slowly-developing, deeply melodic pieces. The album, produced by Manfred Eicher, is issued on the eve of a major tour.

Alice Sara Ott - Nightfall
Released: August 24, 2018
Label: Deutsche Grammophon
Alice Sara Ott presents Nightfall, where she explores the transition and harmony between day and night, light and darkness. This recording showcases a collection of deeply emotional piano pieces by Satie, Debussy and Ravel.
On her new album Nightfall, set for release by the Yellow Label on 24 August 2018, Alice Sara Ott takes a very personal look at the magical moment in time and space between day and night, light and darkness, basing her explorations on works by Debussy, Satie and Ravel. The German-Japanese pianist decided to mark the dual celebration of her 30th birthday and her 10th anniversary as a Deutsche Grammophon artist by examining her relationship with three French composers who have had a significant influence on her, and whose music made an indelible impression on the Parisian arts scene at the turn of the 20th century.

Released: May 04, 2018
Label: ECM Records, ECM 2603
Nik Bärtsch: piano, Sha: bass clarinet, alto saxophone, Thomy Jordi: bass, Kaspar Rast: drums
“Awase”, a term from martial arts, means “moving together” in the sense of matching energies, a fitting metaphor for the dynamic precision, tessellated grooves and balletic minimalism of Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin. Six years have passed since the last release from the Swiss group. In the interim, trimmed from quintet to quartet size and with new bassist Thomy Jordi fully integrated, Ronin has become a subtly different band. Bärtsch speaks of a new-found freedom and flexibility in the approach to the material, with “greater transparency, more interaction, more joy in every performance”.

The exacting rigor in pianist Brad Mehldau's playing made it inevitable he would one day issue a record devoted to a great classical composer. Yet, true to the open-ended implications of its title, After Bach is not merely a recitation of the master's work (not that it really could be, given Mehldau's penchant for improvisation). In fact, the seven original pieces here outnumber the five of Bach's from The Well-Tempered Clavier. ...

The New York Times said the piece’s presentation at Brooklyn Academy of Music “set the auditorium awash in elegiac string sounds and postmillennial gloom. Performed by the composer and the tirelessly innovative Kronos Quartet, the work, written in New York during that epic storm, often resembled the flotsam bobbing on the receding floodwaters, with poignant snippets and small treasures.” The Washington Post calls it "riveting, gorgeous."

Batagraf is a stellar ensemble led by Jon Balke, creating percussive explorations and interrogations of words and moods...
The compositions on "Delights of decay" are by Jon Balke, with lyrics by Emilie Stoesen Christensen (alongside some improvisations). The myriad influences on the Batagraf sound on this collection are numerous and dense, but are distinctly global rather than narrowly localized. The group's interactions, both directly and indirectly with percussion masters from around the world, and travels and workshops in Gambia, Senegal, Nigeria, Cuba, and beyond, have allowed the group to draw from a deep well of ideas that they weave into a new musical language that is rich, evocative, familiar and new. Additional tonality is provided by trumpeter, Mathias Eick and saxophonist Trygve Seim.
